“White nights” is a brand of St. Petersburg, and the best time for romantic walks

Our city has got many names: “Venice of the North”, “Northern Palmyra”, but most of the time we call it “White Nights’ City”. All the winter through we are looking for these days – when night meets the day. White nights is the best time to make acquaintance with our city, fell in love with it, and stay enchanted for life… Many words are already said and written about St. Petersburg and White nights, but for all that, it is impossible to describe texture and atmosphere, to show this beauty. Palaces, cathedrals, bridges, embankments and monuments during really white nights will amaze you, and the entire city is just magnificent. 

When do these white nights in St. Petersburg begin?

During white nights, the dusk meets the dawn, and the night is very bright indeed (if it is not cloudy, of course :)). St. Petersburg is not the unique region where you can watch this phenomenon (it is explained by its geographical location), but only in this city it is so poetic. The right place for those who are in love… This season starts at the end of May and lasts until early July. White nights’ peak is on 22 June, at solstice. And if you are lucky enough, and the sky is clear, it is a miracle every time, this bright day at night...

White nights in St. Petersburg mean non-stop city life, day and night. Crowds of people from Russia and abroad are here to see at first hand this wonder. Concerts, shows, festivals, Day of the city (27th of May), Fountains day in Peterhof – a lot of events take place at this time. Let alone the main gala-day (strictly speaking, night) – “Scarlet sails”, the most fabulous feast for the school graduates, usually held around 22nd of June. It is really a memorable show with concerts, fireworks and other visual effects.

The essential thing that goes together with white nights is bridge drawing. You can just walk along the embankment to watch this phenomenon, or you may take a boat tour. The first bridge (Palace bridge) is drawn at 01.25 a.m., and the traffic is open only after 5.00 in the morning. One of the most beautiful places of St. Petersburg (especially at white nights) is the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island – with fantastic view of the Neva river, embankments and bridges drawing. And it is not the only place in the city that you “must” see during your visit here, during white nights.
